I don’t understand why the police aren’t interested in taking all the evidence that they can get. This system is deeply broken, and there’s no easy fix.
I do not understand why rape kits are being discarded; they contain crucial information that can help prosecute the perpetrators and prevent putting an innocent person away, as mentioned in the article. I would protect the victim, seek justice, and also not wrongfully convict, individuals due to he-said, she-said statements.
Rape kits, which take hours to compile and provide crucial evidence are essential for holding perpetrators accountable and preventing future assaults. Destroying them not only robs survivors of justice but also undermines investigations that could link suspects to other crimes, as seen in the case of Keith Harward, who was exonerated after a preserved kit was tested decades later.
Police are tasked with weighing a survivor’s statement against that of the alleged rapist…Rape kits may exonerate a few individuals who have been wrongfully convicted because of “he said” and “she said” statements. I don’t understand why police departments are throwing away the use of rape kits if their purpose is to ensure not only safety, but also that justice is administered. Without using rape kits, cases can stall, and perpetrators can continue to roam the streets. Although one may argue that testing rape kits would increase the persistent problem of overcrowding in prisons.
